Fates Forever

Last year I joined a startup headed up by Jason Citron (founder of OpenFeint) to begin work on a new title for IOS. I had a very rewarding 4 year run with id software, but I had always been fascinated by the indie game industry and the potential with this new opportunity was something I couldn't pass up.

This image represents the first glimpse of the characters/world I've been designing and there will be much more to share as we near our launch later this year.

Please feel free to visit our game's site to see a current screenshot from the game and sign-up to receive word when we launch.

Our game's site can be found here:

In my process images you'll find the initial value study and the two images I was looking to extract from this single piece. It was an interesting puzzle to create one image that could function as three depending on what our marketing needs were (logo designed by Michael Heald).

Hope you enjoy and please stay tuned for more updates from 'Fates Forever'

Character Ideation

Here's some character exploration for a Native American/US Army mash-up. This workflow (from drawings to value studies) is typical of the way I zero in on a character design before committing to a final color render. I'm always attempting to provide myself with as many options as possible along the way.

Although most of my published work tends to take the form of a final illustration, there's a great deal more along these lines. I find this to be some of the most gratifying work there is ... when the character is still rich with possibility and every line makes a difference. This approach is particularly useful in a studio environment where these sorts of sheets hopefully generate a lot of conversation and reveal any number of potential directions the character could take.

night faerie

In the spirit of Halloween: here's a color sketch from tonight. I came across all sorts of beautiful work on the web today ... made me want to paint a nocturne. Thanks for all the inspiration, art peeps.

Morphic Tide

I created this MTG card art some months back that was just released. It was fun to contribute one of these special edition over-sized cards with the wide aspect ratio. More room to play with compositiona, eye flow and introduce more complexity than card art typically allows.
